North Devon Table Tennis League round-up (Week two)

HOLSWORTHY D’s unbeaten start in Division One was brought to a halt by Instow-based Herons at Sutcombe Village Hall last Tuesday.

After winning 9-1 at Chulmleigh A in their opener, they soon found themselves 4-0 down against their visitors, with only Nathan Jukes taking his match against Rob Gale to a decider.

The home side then got on the board as Ashley Taylor edged past Bill Tregellas 11-9 in the fifth before David Sillifant beat Gale 3-0 to make it 4-2.

Tregellas’ victory over Jukes extended Herons’ lead before Sillifant and Taylor got the better of James Raymont and Gale to ensure a draw if they won the doubles.

However, Tregellas and Raymont proved too strong to earn a 6-4 success.

Holsworthy A were well beaten 8-2 at champions Misfits.

With Owen Salisbury and Sam Jennings unavailable, it meant they travelled with just two.

New player Mark Beaumont beat both Keith Le Milliere and Peter Kneil, but succumbed in a final set decider against Martyn Beer.

Bridgerule’s first ever match in the North Devon League got off to a superb start as they thrashed Chulmleigh A 10-0 at Bridgerule Village Hall.

The visitors managed just two ends all night as the trio of Peter Freeburn, Steve Cragg and David Streak proved too strong.

Both Holsworthy sides fell to defeats last Tuesday night (October 8) in Division Two.

The B team travelled to Instow to face Paddlers but lost 8-2, although that doesn’t tell the whole story as Jill Knightley was defeated in deciders by the home trio of Dave Sweeney, Sam Coutu-Oughton and Joe Percival.

The visitors’ points came from skipper Barry Stearman, who beat both Coutu-Oughton and Percival in deciders.

Holsworthy C fell to an 8-2 defeat at home to last year’s runners-up Littleham. Bob Montague continues to sparkle by beating Mike Bellew and Alan Pomeroy, but Sumiyo Berkeley and Ezra Jukes couldn’t make much of an impression.

David Stone won all three.

Shaun Collins joined Montague in the doubles, but lost in four ends.
