MASTER Dale Trevail and Master Ronald Horner of TT Taekwondo Callington took their pupils to Portsmouth recently to compete in Graham’s Martial Arts Academy’s invitational competition.

Leaving at 4am to make the four-hour journey to the Hampshire city, the team arrived in good time for the 9am start.

Nine students took part which included Poomsae (patterns) like Kata and Kyorugi (fighting).

The Poomsae section was done first with this being the first competition for seven students, and all performed to a high standard. Poomsae is set moves defending against imaginary opponents including blocks, punches and kicks.

Results for the Poomsae division are as follows:

Lewis Sample (yellow tag belt) — silver; Josh Sample (yellow tag belt) — silver; Jonty Hayles (green belt) — silver; Darcy Easton Evans (red belt) — silver; Tobias Easton Evans (red belt) — gold.

Next was the Kyorugi, which is full contact.

Points were scored by corner judges with one point for a punch to the body armour, two points for a turning front or side kick to the body armour, or three points for a spinning or reverse turning kick to the body armour.

Head shots are only for those over the age of 18.

Competition first timers Josh Sample and Summer Rippin both won two from two while Jack Rippin won his fight, Coral Giles Ridd fought three times and Riley Giles Ridd did twice.

Darcy Easton Evans and brother Tobias Easton Evans, who are both experienced competitors, did a really great job with their fights in the tougher higher grades competition, both getting third.

Results for the Kyorugi division are as follows:

Darcy Easton Evans — bronze; Tobias Easton Evans — bronze; Summer Rippin — gold; Jack Rippin — gold; Coral Giles Ridd — gold and silver; Riley Giles Ridd — silver; Josh Sample — gold.
