North Cornwall Table Tennis League 2019/20 (week seven) round-up

DIVISION One champions Torridge made it two wins on the spin as they won 9-1 at Budehaven A.

The hosts were missing star player Mark Beaumont and with Keith Bradshaw unavailable, skipper Dave Salisbury called upon D team captain Anthony Ward to play.

Torridge were at full strength and won the first six matches without dropping a set.

The doubles did go to four ends before David Streak made it 8-0.

Bude did get on the board as Dave Salisbury secured a superb four-end victory over Steve Cragg.

The final match of the evening was a close affair as Owen Salisbury fought back from 2-0 down to take his clash with Peter Freeburn to a decider. However, the veteran kept his nerve to clinch victory.

Unbeaten North Hill A won by the same scoreline at Crackington A.

Michael Briggs and Shirley Luckhurst were both unbeaten all evening in the singles and combined to clinch the doubles point.

Crackington’s sole point came from Frank Barnes who defeated Iain Oxenham in straight ends.

With Whitstone’s clash with Budehaven D postponed, the only other match saw Helland whitewash Budehaven C 10-0 with Ingus Abolnieks, Mike Fisher and Ritchie Bartlett their players.

In the second-tier, leaders Crackington B kept up their superb start with a 10-0 success over North Hill C.

Debutant Jane Johnson picked up a treble for the home side with Keiron Chatterjea and Judith Cook doing likewise.

Budehaven E were held to a 5-5 draw at North Hill B.

On a long night where four matches went the distance and only two won in straight ends, all six players won a match.

Braces from Trevor Luckhurst and Adrian Davis as well as Michael Kinger’s victory over Roy Stubbs, gave the hosts a 5-3 cushion, but Stubbs and Ian Westaway held their nerve in the night’s final matches to earn themselves a share of the spoils.

Ian Edwards beat Kinger as well as combining with Westaway to win the doubles in the decider.

It was a mixed week for Bridgerule as they played twice.

On Tuesday they were convincing 9-1 winners at North Hill C with Alan Quilter and Shaun Collins at the treble.

Although David Aplin beat Jay Brewer, Brewer still picked up a double.

Crackington C won 7-3 at Bridgerule A despite Quilter’s second hat-trick in a week.

Trevor Dean, Simon Patterson and James Ellis were too strong for Brewer and Collins, although Ellis did have to fight back from 2-1 down against Collins.

There was just one match played in Division Three last week as Bridgerule C picked up their first ever win with a 3-2 success over Budehaven H at Bridgerule Village Hall.

Teresa Moule beat both Finlay McKinnon and Alex Worth in the fifth end with Sally Webbw

Worth had no trouble in beating Webb before the doubles saw the Budehaven youngsters comeback from 2-0 to claim victory.
