The Tenby Golf Club team claimed its first victory in the Dyfed League this season away against Carmarthen B. The elevated parkland course was in an excellent overall condition, although the greens were somewhat slower than those at Tenby.

In the top match, Ben Childs and Neil Thomas found the inform youngster Gwennallt Jones and his partner Phil Lewis a little too strong off their handicaps and lost two and one. Graham More, who enjoyed an excellent round, and Gary McNeilly levelled matters with a two and one defeat of Scott Jones and Tim Harries.

Nick Thomas and Rob Willcox gelled well and won easily by four and three. However, Tenby's next two pairs, Steve Sutcliffe and Loz Phillips plus Andrew Cope and Lewis Hurlow, both went down four and three to Clive Evans and Gerald Vaughan plus Ray Heath and Gary Evans, respectively.

Thus, the match was poised at three games to two to the home side. In the sixth rubber, Darren Thomas and Terry Davies won by the narrowest of margins against veteran Jeff Harries and Ray Skinner, thanks to Davies's birdie on the 18th hole.

Jon Bolter and debutant Brian Jones were five up at one stage and, despite a great comeback by Carmarthen's Mike Sizer and Mick Fenney, they held on to win two and one. After a shaky start, Roger Schooling and Craig Thomas proved too good for Haydn Harries and Andy Jones, winning four and three and thus clinching the match for Tenby.

The final game went all the way to the last green, but Neil Webb and Tenby captain Richard Ormond lost one down to Carmarthen skipper Aled Owen and his partner Paul McCall.

The Tenby team enjoyed a warm welcome and an excellent meal at Carmarthen. The next two matches are at home, i.e. a Jeff Harries Bowl KO tie against Newport on Monday, May 25, and a league fixture against Aberystwyth on June 6.
