WHEN Heather Sirmon’s daughter Evelyne took up tae kwon-do, Heather decided she might as well join in too, and what a decision it’s proved to be.
So far Heather’s decision to get up and join in has seen her win three gold medals. She is the Southern, Scottish and British Champion for patterns, and she has also earned a grading award for best student. Fellow mum Rachel Stratton has also made the move off the spectators bench, and so far has gained a bronze medal at the Southern Championships and a silver at the British.
Heather said: “I was watching Evelyne at her classes, and her gradings, and at competitions, and I thought I might as well try it myself. I really like the challenge. You get to work on your fitness, balance, flexibility, and learning Korean terminology is a mental challenge too. All the people I’ve met have been lovely and I’m really looking forward to competing at the World Championships in Birmingham next year.”
Instructors Guy and Lisa Southard are also delighted and hope that more people will be inspired.
They said: “It’s a brilliant example to set for your children, of course, but it’s also a rewarding experience for grown ups. It’s something everyone can do at their own level and pace, and we’re really looking forward to the World Championships too. Around 30 countries will be represented — the atmosphere and the tae kwon-do are amazing!”
“Our junior class is currently full but there is room in the family class for any age of adults and children aged seven and above.
“Beginners all get a free trial. And you’ve got to be in it to win it!”
