Tribute Cornwall Two

Roseland 73

A DEPLETED Camelford side were shown no mercy at Lane End on Saturday as leaders Roseland eased to within one win of promotion.

Due to an ever increasing injury and illness list, only 11 Camelford players were available to play in the penultimate fixture of the league season, but were helped out by Bodmin’s Matt Hawken and two Roseland players, making it a 14-a-side match.

On the whistle it was clear that it was going to be a long afternoon for the home faithful as the league leaders showed exactly why they are in such a position, using their powerful forwards to break down the Camelford defence before breaking through to score impressive tries throughout the first-half.

A crumb of comfort came in the form of Camelford’s formidable scrum which not only held its own against a big pack, but on occasions pushed it about. This would not stop the onslaught though and Roseland had racked up 40 unanswered points by the half-time whistle.

Going downhill in the second-half Camelford rallied, although still shipping tries allowing Roseland to rack up 73 points by full-time, they showed just what they could do in attack on a number of occasions.

On a rare attack, Camelford shipped the ball wide through the hands of Pete Thorne which unlocked full-back Ryan Jones to sprint over and under the posts for his second try in as many games for his new club. Conversion was slotted by captain Dan Stuckey, making sure that Camelford came away with at least a score for the afternoon. But this was not the only attacking foray for Camelford. Using their solid scrum they pushed once again for the line, taking the ball on within the forwards until number eight Matt Dyson found himself dotting the ball down, only to hear that he had double moved to ground the ball, but the try was not awarded.

The second-half ebbed and flowed until the final whistle went at 73-7.

Team spokesperson, Martyn Baker, said: “The players walked off the pitch with their heads held up high knowing we had given our all and had impressed in spells.

“Nearly all the players had earned themselves the man of the match award for their performances, notably the forward five who had come up trumps against one of the most powerful scrums in the league, and the back line when given their chance proved just how dangerous on the attack they can be. The award in the end went to Ryan Jones for scoring a brilliant try and tackling his heart out all afternoon.”

Camelford don’t have a game for the next two weekends and will hope that it will ease the injury list and that more of the squad will be available for the final game of the season at Stithians on December 7 (2.30pm).
