RFU?Junior Vase

St Just 0

CAMELFORD’S first competitive fixture of their tenth anniversary season ended with a 21-0 victory over St Just in the RFU Junior Vase at Lane End on Saturday.

Camelford have generally been slow starters, but with a mere 30 seconds gone, Pete Thorne, who would feature well through out the game, hit the corner flag following a storming run.

Camelford kept up the immense pressure on St Just and eventually this led to a five-metre scrum for the visitors. The ball was taken against the head and Camelford scored due to some good three quarters passing. The ball was spun wide and Thorne drifted a long pass into the hands of Jack Buckley. The right-winger had to break a tackle but scored a great try, his first for The Ford, about five metres in from the touchline. Dan Stuckey slotted the extras to put the home side 7-0 up after five minutes.

This sparked even more intense pressure by Camelford. St Just’s determined defence thwarted ‘The Ford’ for the next 20 minutes.

Camelford ran their moves and drills keeping St Just on the back foot and deep in their own half. On 20 minutes Camelford lost flanker Callum Fritchley who was replaced by Kevin Creber. The intensive assault continued with runs from all over the park.

St Just gave a penalty away on 25 minutes. Thorne was the quickest to respond for both teams and he took the tap to score and this was then converted by Stuckey to make it 14-0.

For the rest of the half, the visitors did well not to concede any further points as the scoreline remained the same.

‘The Ford’ added a third try soon after half-time.

Lock Dave Evans made a great incursion having taken the ball at the lineout. He drove 10 metres to set the ruck from which Lee Robinson, at scrum-half, was able to launch a controlled attack. The ball was spun wide again and Thorne smashed his way through three or four desperate tackles to record his second try. The conversion was right out on the touchline, but Stuckey magnificently slotted the extras.

With well over 20 minutes remaining it was St Just’s turn to turn the screw and Camelford’s turn to show that they could defend as well as attack. The proverbial sink was thrown at Camelford by the now desperate St Just for the remainder of the game as the home side showed they had learned plenty of lessons from last week’s defeat at St Austell and send the home supporters happy.

Peter Thorne rightly gained the ‘man-of-the Match accolade, though there were notably good performances from many of the home boys. Martyn Baker had a storming first-half, Ryan Welch played with great ability on the left-wing and Jack Buckley replicated this on the right flank. Ollie Plummer made excellent breaks in the centre.
