Tribute Cornwall League Two
Helston 39
CAMELFORD put in a resolute performance before losing 39-5 at home to Helston on Saturday at Lane End.
After visiting relegated Roseland last weekend, ‘the Ford’ hosted the West Cornwall side, who also came down last term.
Camelford were missing a few notable players through injury, amongst them captain Dan Yeatman, who was out with a knee injury, The team were still upbeat and determined to have strong showing against a strong side.
Both sides’ forwards were in no mood to give an inch early on, but the visitors struck first on ten minutes.
This only spurred on ‘the Ford’ and some good running got the into a strong position in the visitors 22, the Camelford winger was tackled into touch.
The resulting lineout was over thrown and the home side were able to retrieve the ball and set a good ruck. From this, captain and fly-half Dan Stuckey was able to drive for the line and touch down for Camelford’s first and only try of the afternoon.
After this score Helston began to turn the screw on the Camelford but the tackling was strong as they denied plenty of opportunities.
The next score came 34 minutes in the game when another good break from the Helston backline left the Camelford defence in disarray and another converted try was scored, leaving the score at 14-5.
Camelford went again and engineered themselves a strong position in the Helston half, from a good ruck the ball was passed through the backs until it reached outside-centre Micheal Burton who made a good drive for the line, good covering tackles meant that the ball could not be grounded and the scoring chance was gone for Camelford. The half time score was 14-5 .
After the interval, Camelford had the hill to climb in attack and this proved to be fatal, as Helston started to score freely, racking up the rest of their points during the second period of the game.
Despite Camelford’s injury list increasing. they kept at it through to the bitter end and never showed signs of giving up.
Club spokesperson Martyn Baker said: “Although it ended 39-5 to Helston, a hard game had been played and they were impressed with the dogged attitude of our side.
“Also special mention to our prop Aaron Tharme, who made his 100th appearance for us in this match.”
The return fixture takes place this Saturday at the King George V Playing Fields.
