Lankelly-Fowey 41

CAMELFORD’s league season got off to a disappointing start as they were comfortably defeated 41-7 by Lankelly-Fowey at Lane End.

From the start, the visitors showed a sensible gameplan, which revolved around their tactically astitute fly-half that was clearly designed to pressurise Camelford into mistakes.

With just five minutes on the clock Lankelly landed their first three points with an excellent penalty due to the home side killing a ruck. Camelford barely got out of their own half for most of the first period, but were able to repel many Lankelly attacks through resolute defence as they added just one more penalty until the half hour mark.

On 33 minutes, the visitors took the lead through a well worked move and were then gifted another try on half-time as a pass back inside gave the visitors an interception, which was duly taken and the conversion put Lankelly 20 points up.

The second-half followed exactly the same pattern as had been the case in the first and on 48 minutes the visitors capitalised on a mistake when Camelford failed to clear their lines and just two minutes later another mistake made it 34-0.

With just five minutes left Lankelly scored their fifth converted try giving them 41 points. This seemed to be a spark for Camelford, all be it too late.

Carl Rockell charged down a dink ahead, Lankelly’s defence broke down and Rockell was hauled back giving the referee no choice but to award a penalty try to the Ford. This was duly converted on full-time.

Special mention was reserved for the young probationer referee who did extremely well to marshal the game in the conditions.
