YOUNG Cornish ace Alex Quinn scored his maiden car racing victory at Donington Park in Leicestershire recently, despite the outing being only his second ever competitive weekend.
Quinn, 15, who graduated from a stellar karting career over the Winter, made the move into car racing with the Fortec Motorsports squad in the Ford MSA Formula Championship, supporting the popular British Touring Car Championship.
The teenager was selected by the Racing Steps Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation which supports talented young but under-funded British motor racing individuals.
Following a promising opening round of his career at Brands Hatch at the start of April, Quinn had only completed three days of pre-season testing ahead of the Donington Park weekend.
Despite that, he demonstrated his ability and the RSF support, by scoring his maiden career pole position for the first of the three scheduled races. His hopes of converting that to a race victory were made all the more precarious when a sudden hail storm drenched the circuit, forcing drivers to quickly change to wet weather tyres ahead of the start.
Quinn maintained his composure though, impressively leading throughout, to claim his first car racing win.
He completed the weekend with ninth and sixth place finishes respectively, placing him sixth in the standings and top of the Rookie points table.
Alex said: “It’s an unbelievable feeling to take my first car racing win so early.
“We were quick in the slippery conditions in pre-weekend testing, so that gave me confidence that I could produce a good result.
“I was lucky from the start and opening lap as others seemed to struggle with the tricky wet track. Of course, leading also meant that I didn’t have spray from cars in front. I now want to use the confidence that this early win has given me to boost my results in the upcoming races. I must thank the Racing Steps Foundation for their support and Fortec Motorsports for providing me with such a fantastic car to drive.”
Quinn returned to Ford MSA Formula action on Sunday at Thruxton in Hampshire, again the race was televised on ITV4.
