South Division
Bude 3
CARA Phillips was at the double as a depleted Bude started their 2019/20 South Division campaign with a 3-2 victory at Okehampton.
Despite going with only one substitute, Louise Shepherd came along to help with sideline duties, the team were in possession and controlled the game nearly all the way through the game.
With two fantastic strikes coming from Cara Phillips, followed by a solid deflection from Lucy Storry and an unfortunate disallowed goal from Tammy Snowsill, the women came away with three goals.
The defence were solid throughout the whole game, with Miranda Roper and Robyn Pengilly making their debut after some time off, they really held their ground, alongside new captain Amy Gear making some vital saves in goal.
With great forward work from Ruby Bryant, Charlotte Gist, Rachael Pomeroy and Katharine Muller, possession was held throughout the game. Leanne Stanbury made some excellent runs and really tested their defence and goalkeeper with her strong strikes on goal.
Reflecting on the game, Gear said: “The ladies played their socks off and we came away with a very deserved victory.”
Plymouth Marjon seconds are the visitors to the Budehaven Sports Centre this Saturday (2.30pm).

Southern Two
Camborne SoM 5
Bude 2
BUDE were well beaten by Camborne School of Mines in their league opener at Penryn College on Saturday.
The visitors headed down to the Cornish coast in relatively good spirits but this was soon dashed as they started very slowly handing the initiative to the home side with two early goals.
Bude did have a slightly shuffled team due to a couple of players being unavailable, most notably Kristof Saunders making his debut in goal due to a knee injury preventing him playing outfield. His eagerness almost got him in trouble early on, but his nerves settled and he survived to go on and make a number of good saves.
Despite this, things got worse before they got better as the home side took a 3-0 lead.
With time Bude settled and grew with confidence this resulted in a well-worked goal as Jared Slade neatly set up David Pipe to open his account on his debut.
Camborne restored their three-goal lead as a scuffed shot bounced agonisingly past Saunders and into the net; Bude remained determined, epitomised by man-of-the-match Cayden Gill who was playing in an unfamiliar midfield role. Gill made numerous telling turnovers and then turned defence in attack with a lovely range of dribbling and passing skills on show, proving what a valuable and somewhat underrated asset he has become over the last couple of years.
As the game wore on, Bude closed the gap further as a short corner was illegally stopped on the line; so Pipe stepped up and coolly fired home from the penalty spot.
Camborne had the final say with a short corner of their own as after the initial shot was saved, the rebound was unstoppably fired into the roof of the net from close range to make the final score, 5-2.
Despite the result, Bude played well in patches and will hope to get their first points on the board this Saturday when Duchy A visit the Budehaven Sports Centre (1pm push back).
