Upper Tamar Lake

Sailing Club Race

Report — July 3

PAUL Whybrow enjoyed a day to remember last Sunday to win both races on the same day.

Eighteen helms came to Tamar Lake to race, attracted by the promise of sun and moderate winds from the north west.

In the Commodore Series, run first, there was a multiple choice question as to how to get to the first buoy; some tacked closer to the Cornwall bank, some struck out towards the Devon.

The fastest boats and the best sailors won out.

The Lasers of James Pollard, Jane Anderson and Bob Sampson led, with an eventual long gap back to Bob who was becalmed at Inlet buoy, the wind completely blanketed by the headland and the bushes growing on it.

The Solos of Paul Whybrow and Adam Hilton followed this trio, Paul eventually winning out and then came the mixed fleet; more Lasers, Toppers and more, of which John Dabbs’ Gull did particularly well, gaining fifth place on handicap.

In the Pursuit race which followed, the winds increased in strength catching out several sailors including Jane Anderson. Paul Whybrow sailed brilliantly, overtaking several boats who’d started ahead of him to take victory.
