Torpoint Mosquito Sailing Club celebrated the official launch of its new gig rowing section by holding a successful open day on Saturday.

Scores of people went along and tried out rowing in the new half-gigs or had a go at dinghy sailing, yacht sailing and wind-surfing. Visitors also got out in kayaks and even the scuba diving section got in on the act and had people 'diving' in a plastic tub!

In sunny but windy conditions a band of club volunteers ensured that more than 50 people were able to experience one or more free watersports taster sessions with rowing proving a popular option.

Visitors were able to look around the club's facilities which include a licensed bar and members' restaurant as well as updated changing rooms and workshop and storage facilities made possible by funding secured in 2013 as part of the 'Inspired Facilities' legacy after the London 2012 Olympics.

Visitors could also visit the RNLI stand, try to win a prize in the raffle or sample the teas and homemade cakes on the cadet stand. The cadet section, which is open to young people aged eight to 18 and it often has a waiting list, was pleased to raise around £200.

Bob Holder, the club secretary, who has been instrumental in getting the rowing section up and running, said: 'The launch of the rowing section on open day was a real success. Lots of visitors and existing club members got out in the gigs and really enjoyed themselves.

'Many thanks to coaches Lisa, Hayley and Rachel who made it possible. We are delighted to announce that we will be running weekly rowing sessions during the summer on Wednesday evenings at 6.30pm open to club members.' Steve Creek, Commodore, said: 'Despite the wind being a little frisky at times, it's wonderful that so many people came along and experienced what great fun it is being out on the water. There was a real buzz and sense of excitement at the club and we gained quite a few new members, mainly family groups.

'Thanks must go to the RNLI volunteers who gave their time to come along and support us and to our all own hard-working volunteers and staff for making the day so successful,' he added.
