A 17-YEAR-OLD from Coads Green has been announced as winner of Canoe England's young volunteer award at a Nottingham held ceremony.

Jack Luckhurst, who is a student on the Level 3 B-Tech Outdoor Education course at Duchy College, is an active paddler with the Tamar Canoe Association, and in his spare time enjoys the challenge of any white water he can find.

He has achieved many British Canoe Union (BCU) Star Awards and attained his BCU Level 1 Coaching qualification earlier this year — with the second stage to come in the New Year.

These achievements have enabled him to help out with coaching the beginner sessions on a weekly basis on the River Tamar, whilst he was also integral in the club's 'Go Paddling Day' in the summer. He also spends an evening each week helping coach youngsters at the kayak pool sessions at Launceston Leisure Centre.
