LAUNCESTON Tennis Club concluded its 2018/19 season with an evening of bowling, food and trophies at Trethorne on Friday, February 22.
It was a chance to look back at the year’s achievements and look forward to the upcoming season.
Awards were presented for the club’s internal competitions. The big winner of the evening was Charlotte Halls, who picked up three gongs. She was the winner of the Girl’s Singles, the Ladies Plate and the Ladies Doubles along with her partner Ali Parnell. Runners-up in the Girl’s Singles was Issey Thorns. Jenny Worth came second in the Plate and the joint runners-up in the Ladies Doubles were Tonia Jones and Suzanne Cole and Hilary Rhodes and Jenny Worth.
The men’s and ladies singles were won by Graham Worth and Shannon Sandy, who defeated Henry Cornish and Sarah Statton respectively.
The Men’s Plate was picked up by Ashley Taylor who outlasted Chris Stanbury in the final. The Boys Singles title was claimed by Matthew Ryall, with Simon Cornish the runner-up.
Henry Cornish made up for his defeat in the Men’s Singles final with victories in the Men’s and Mixed Doubles. His partner in the Men’s was Adrian Riddick while he teamed up with Tonia Jones in the Mixed. Runners-up in these competitions were the pairings of Luke Roberts and Chris Stanbury, and Ali Parnell and Martin Cooke. The American Doubles winner was Barry Frayn.
The club also celebrated ten years at its current courts last summer with a barbeque and a tennis tournament which was won by Hayley Frayn.
The evening was also a chance to look at the club’s league participation. In the Summer League, Launceston Tennis Club had entered two men’s and three ladies teams.
Unfortunately, both A teams were relegated but the Ladies B team were winners of the Cornwall East division. The Men’s B team pushed hard but were just unable to gain promotion from Division Two East while the Men’s C team propped up the same division.
It was noted that all the teams had struggled to find players at times and it was decided that the club will only enter two men’s teams this summer, as well as continuing with two lady teams. It was also decided that a focus of the club would be to attract new members so that they can hopefully field more teams in the future.
Club nights are Tuesdays and Thursdays. The club is welcoming to all who are interested in playing tennis, whether new to the sport or consider themselves the next Andy Murray or Johanna Konta.
Launceston have members of all ages including juniors. For more information about playing, contact Jenny Worth at [email protected] or Ashley Taylor via [email protected]
The club also paid tribute to outgoing treasurer, Tim Hambly, who had served the club in the role for 30 years.
