MEMBERS of Launceston Tennis Club have been enjoying the lovely weather — until recently — with club sessions, matches and fun tournaments entertaining all ages.
With one match remaining, the men’s A team have had a reasonably successful season, retaining their status in County Division One East of the Cornwall Summer League. The team had home and away wins versus St Austell B and impressive home wins against Veryan A and Bude B.
The main players — Henry Cornish, Adam Baker, Rod Wood and Graham Worth — have been ably supported by Adam and Alex Cornish and Barry Frayn. The players are now hoping for a successful run in the county cup competitions taking place in September.
The men’s B team have been busy introducing some young blood into their team with Matt Ryall, Josh Cavey and Ben Bryant doing really well. Although the team only won two matches from ten, there were some other very close matches.
Club spokesperson, Jenny Worth said: “It was good experience for the youngsters and this can only bode well for the future.”
Having finished all their eight matches, which they won five, the ladies team (Launceston Ladies A) are currently leading County Division One — however teams in the wings have games in hand.
Eight different players played for the team throughout the season with some fantastic performances including clinching bonus points for winning matches that were all square and came down to totalling the number of games. They also had impressive full point wins against St Agnes and Falmouth. As Launceston have completed their matches and Bude Ladies A have yet to finish, Bude need nine points from their final two fixtures at Falmouth A and Truro B.
Other activities have seen the fun summer tournaments.
The Wimbledon tournament was won by Adam Baker while Charlotte Halls took the honours in the American Doubles.
The junior pay and play sessions on Mondays (and now on Wednesdays as well in the holidays) have been well supported as have been the adult sessions on Thursdays at 6pm.
The club are also hopeful that the sunny weather will return so that the club singles and doubles competitions can be played in the dry.
