WES?Smith and Jordan Platt both remain unbeaten in the professional boxing ranks after they both recorded points victories at a packed Plymouth Guildhall last Saturday night.
Altarnun’s Smith, was fighting for the second time in the paid ranks after an injury ruled him out of his second bout back in February.
Smith had to face a last minute replacement in the form of Russian-born Andrej Cepur, from Lithuania, who had picked up eight wins from his 45-fight record. From the bell, Smith looked sharp, taking control of the contest with very fast, accurate and powerful punching both to the head and body of his opponent as he took very little in return.
By the end of the second round it looked like a stoppage was on the cards, but both of Smith’s hands were hurting due to the volume of shots landing on the forehead of the tough Lithuanian. Round three saw Smith change his tactics and attempt to get up close to find a softer target to hit by working the body and uppercuts. The rest of the fight was fairly comfortable as he won all four rounds in picking up a 40-36 win on the scorecards to take his professional record to two wins from two.
Launceston’s Platt, who is known as ‘the Skatman’, made his professional debut against another last-minute replacement in the shape of Michael ‘the Madman’ Mooney from the Midlands who boasted just eight wins from his 36 fight record.
Platt picked up a virus in the week leading up to the fight and was only cleared to compete on Saturday morning.
Despite being a bit stiff, Platt still had big success with his usual no nonsense ‘walk em down and blast’ approach connecting with solid overhand rights to the head and hurtful hooks to the body.
Platt tried to apply pressure in all four rounds against his tricky opponent who had plenty of success himself with classy uppercuts and body shots. The final bell ended a solid performance for Jordan with his hand being raised to secure his first win by 40 points to 37.
Trainer Des Charnock was delighted with his fighters and praised the large Launceston travelling contingent in the crowd.
Charnock said: “The Launceston fans as usual were superb and I would like to thank all of you.
“It sounded like there was at least 1,000 of you in there and it made the atmosphere brilliant.
“Both Wes and Jordan put in good solid performances so it was a great night for everybody.”
