THREE of Launceston’s Amateur boxers were out in action following last minute call-ups at the Bude Boxing Academy’s Spring Time Dust Up show on Saturday night in B.E.D. nightclub.
The show featured a bumper 17-bout line-up in front of a very appreciative audience.
First up for Launceston saw Evan Crabb (12) make his debut appearance for the club in a three by one-minute skills contest against William Basford (13) from Bude. This was a rare match up of two young southpaws, and although Evan was giving away 12 months in age, he was very comfortable in keeping his lively opponent backed up to the ropes using well-timed long-range punches. The Launceston boxer displayed superb boxing skills and concentration throughout the contest. One to watch out for in the future.
Next up saw Brandon Charnock (15) step up with four days notice to face London southpaw Tommy Smith (15) from the Eltham and District ABC in a contest held over three, two-minute rounds.
Brandon boxed on the back foot during the first round, keeping everything at long-range with both lads having successes with the bell concluding a fairly even start.
The second stanza saw Charnock turn up the attacks, scoring well with solid straight right hands and left hooks to the head. Round three saw the Eltham southpaw push hard to the bell — connecting with strong uppercuts to the body while Brandon countered well to the head. Brandon’s hand was raised as the winner with a unanimous points decision.
Finally, Launceston’s Jowan Knights made his debut appearance in an amateur boxing ring and faced Bude’s unbeaten Ben Finn in a light-heavyweight contest.
Knights was cool, calm and collected and boxed behind lightning fast and very accurate straight left and right hands before connecting with a solid shot to the head that sent Finn falling into the ropes within the first minute of the first round.
Knights immediately followed up with three solid uppercuts to the chin, which forced the referee to intervene. Dazed and confused, Finn was unable to return to his feet and the contest was stopped with the Launceston boxer being declared the winner by knockout.
Reflecting on the night, trainer Des Charnock, said: “The Launceston supporters were out in force and played their part in lifting the Launceston boxers’ spirits. Unbelievably loud and amazing support from them all! You would have been forgiven for thinking you were at a Launceston show when our boxers were doing their thing.
“A huge well done to all the boxers and a massive thank you to all the Launceston supporters. You were all brilliant!”
