Upper Tamar Lake Sailing Club race

report June 26, 2016

Cup 3

JAMES Pollard claimed a last gasp victory on Sunday after overtaking Bob Sampson on the last lap.

In drizzly and windy conditions, the obvious way of crossing the start line was on port tack; Bob Sampson did and got away clear, making West White in a single tack (the slower boats needed two). But there was a possibility of starting on starboard tack with priority over anyone you came across on port.

Vicki Duncalf tried that and caught Alan Comber unawares meaning penalty turns for Alan. Following Bob in the lead was James Pollard and then Jane Anderson’s flying 4.7. Linda Spiller led the other Lasers in front of Penny Abbott and Graham Joyce. John Duncalf headed the Toppers with John Buckett’s Bosun making its way past this mini-fleet.

On lap two the full Lasers pulled away from Jane’s 4.7 while Graham Joyce capsized a couple of times with Tamar Lake as gusty as ever.

On lap three Penny overtook Linda and the Bosun was past all the Toppers, now led by Nathan Pollard before brother James’ heroics earned him the win on the fourth and final lap.

1 J Pollard (Laser); 2 R Sampson (Laser); 3 J Anderson (Laser 4.7);

4 N Pollard (Topper); 5 V Duncalf (Topper); 6 P Abbott (Laser Radial); 7 L Spiller (LaserRadial)

8 J Buckett, B Pollard (Bosun); 9 J Duncalf (Topper); 10 G Joyce (Laser); 11 G Floyd (Solo); 12 A Comber, J Weller (Enterprise).

Pursuit 3

Vicki Duncalf started and finished the Pursuit 3 race first to emerge victorious. her husband followed two minutes later and Nathan Pollard behind him.

The first non-Topper to come to the start line, seven minutes after Vicki, was Alan Comber and John Weller’s Enterprise. This was followed by Adam Hilton’s Solo and Jane Anderson’s Laser 4.7.

In the prescribed 65 minutes, the big-sailed Solo got past the Enterprise and two of the Toppers in front of it; so did the little 4.7 Laser.

The wind remained as gusty as ever, catching out Linda Spiller, but the lighter boats were often up on the plane on a day when the course favoured reaching.

1 V Duncalf (Topper); 2 A Hilton (Solo); 3 J Pollard (Laser); 4 A Comber, J Weller (Enterprise); 5 J Duncalf (Topper); 6 J Anderson (Laser 4.7); 7 R Sampson (Laser); 8 L Spiller (Laser Radial); 9 N Pollard (Topper); 10 P Abbott (Laser Radial); 11 G Joyce (Laser).

Many thanks were expressed to officers of the day, Christine Hartigan and Adam Hilton in the morning and Paul Whybrow in the afternoon.
