Upper Tamar Lake Sailing Club race report —October 25
Frostbite 4
A LIGHT southerly breeze and warm sunshine caressed the water and the 16 dinghies which took the start included, for the first time, Annie Quatermaine’s Laser.
The first leg towards the dam was tricky; start on starboard tack and you had to round the buoy on port; start on port you had to sail most of the way on wind-sheltered water but could come into the buoy on starboard.
Jane Anderson and Adam Hilton got round while Dam Green was still uncongested but after that the majority port arrivers got very tangled up with the starboard arrivers and a number of penalty turns had to be performed.
On the broad reach to West Red the fast boats asserted themselves, James Pollard joining Jane at the front with Sue Murray and Bob Sampson in the RS200 getting past the Hilton and Whybrow Solos to establish themselves in third place.
On the second lap Rachael Pomeroy with Cilla Gilbert crewing the Bosun found an extra bit of wind on the way up to Dam Green and passed both the Bosun and the Otter sailed by the Bucketts.
The handicap recognized a well sailed boat and brought her up from seventh at the finish line to first in the results. Equally the fastest of the Toppers, Elliot Pomeroy’s, went from thirteenth to fifth.

Icicle 4
A CHANGED course attempted to create a reach that would let the RS200 fly its gennaker long enough to overcome its horrible handicap and took in an unfamiliar passage through the yellow buoys.
James Pollard got away first with Jane Anderson, Paul Whybrow and Linda Spiller in hot pursuit. More bunching round Dam Green meant the RS200 (Bob Sampson now helming) doing a penalty. He went on through the fleet to third on the water.
The beat back up the lake involved an intricate web of boats with wind shifts and gusts exposing a lot of hulls. Jane led but was continually pressed by James who ended the race a mere seven seconds behind her.
Paul Whybrow was handicapped in the Solo battle by a broken rudder downhaul; he spent a lot of the race in the back of his boat sorting it out!
Robin Spiller’s Streaker ended up in front of him. Next came Linda Spiller’s Laser Radial and then Rachael Pomeroy, flying again in the Bosun. Nathan Pollard got the better of Elliot Pomeroy this time.
1. R Pomeroy, C Gilbert (Bosun); 2. J Anderson (Laser); 3. J Pollard (Laser); 4. J Dabbs (Gull); 5. A Hilton (Solo); 6. N Buckett, B Pollard (Bosun); 7. J Buckett (Otter); 8. N Pollard (Topper); 9. R Spiller (Streaker); 10. R Sampson, S Murray (RS200); 11. E Pomeroy (Topper); 12. L Spiller (Laser R); 13. V Duncalf (Topper); 14. P Whybrow (Solo); 15. A Comber, J Weller (Enterprise). Retired: A Quatermaine (Laser R)
