LAUNCESTON Tennis Club recently held their Club Finals Day following the conclusion of the Summer League season.
Held in glorious weather at the courts down by the Launceston College playing fields, a cream tea was on offer for the excllent crowd that had gathered.
The men’s and ladies’ finals were carbon copies of 2015 and with the same results - Shannon Sandy defeating Sarah Statton and Graham Worth defeating brother Kevin.
The Men’s Plate final was contested between Morgan Craig and Joseph Tucker - Morgan’s defensive excellence and ability to get around the court with ease - being the decisive element of the match.
The Junior Boys’ Singles winner was also the 2015 champion, Will Heard, (the county under 12 champion) who defeated Henry Cornish.
In the Junior Girls’ Singles, the close pairing of Emma Gillard and Charlotte Halls saw Emma coping better in the windy conditions to take the title.
The closest match of the day was between Chris Thorns and Matthew Ryall for the Junior Boys’ Plate - Matt winning in the match tie-break 10-7 while the Junior Doubles saw Matt and Josh Cavey defeat Chris and sister Issey.
The five teams playing in the county summer league’s had varying results - the best being the ladies’ A team finishing third in the Premier Division and the Men’s B team winning County Two East.
The final fun club tournament of the summer, the September Challenge, was very evenly contested with some great tennis played.
The winners were Jon Wyatt and Henry Cornish with runners-up being Graham Worth and Morgan Craig.
The junior pay and play sessions on Monday afternoon’s and also the adult pay and play sessions on Thursday evenings finish at the end of September, but club sessions and coaching continue throughout the winter months, the players are hoping for the good weather to continue.
