THE summer season has drawn to a close with the Singles Finals Day at Launceston Tennis Club held on Sunday, September 13.
The mens singles was a battle of the Worths — brothers Kevin and Graham had not played each other in the final for some years and in this eagerly awaited contest Graham edged a competitive match 6-4, 7-6.
Shannon Sandy was aiming to retain her ladies singles title and although Sarah Statton made her work all the way, in another good final with some excellent tennis, Shannon became champion 6-3, 6-3.
The closest match of the day was in the junior girls’ event. Charlotte Halls took the first set 6-1. Lauren Bryant came back strongly in the second winning 7-6 and in the match tie-break it could have gone either way, with Charlotte eventually winning 11-9 — a great game of tennis and huge promise for the future.
Boys’ singles winner Will Heard — who had defeated Joseph Tucker at an earlier date — competed in the final of the men’s plate event — his opponent Adam Baker was blown away by Will’s excellent tennis shots in the first set 0-6 but got going in the second for a competitive set succombing 4-6.
Congratulations went to Will — definitely a name to watch in the future.
In the ladies’ plate event Soozie Trice and Jenny Worth had a great first set with hard-hitting rallies, however Soozie’s power of shot proved too strong for Jenny in the second and Soozie won the ladies plate for the second year 6-4, 6-2.
The final match was also an extremely even affair. With some really long rallies, both boys hit consistently well in the plate final and both Chris Thorns and Josh Cavey gave it their all — with the match score 6–4 to Josh in the first set and 4–2 to Chris in the second, play was suspended due to the weather and the result was declared an honourable draw.
The doubles events were held during Sundays in August the results being as follows:
Men: Winners — Ben Watkins and Chris Stanbury; Runners Up — Rod Wood and Graham Worth
Mixed: Winners — Rod Wood and Henry Cornish; Runners Up — Penny McMillan and Paul Rostron
Ladies: Winners — Sarah Statton and Maureen McCann; Runners Up — Anne Pywell and Jenny Worth
Before the winter league matches start the club is holding the September Challenges — with six teams competing in the ultra-competitive tournament on Monday evenings and five teams in the mildy-competitive on Wednesdays; these are events to keep the social and competitive side of the club going during the shoulder month.
