Gammon Trophy semi-final — Sunday, August 11

HAVING once again reached the semi-final of this county competition, Launceston’s ladies travelled to Tehidy Park Golf Club to take on current holders Perranporth.

The final score line of 5.5-1.5 to Perranporth does not reflect how close the match was, with games being decided on the last hole or on extra holes just going Perranporth’s way.

Launceston’s points saw Cath Hopkins win and Avril Starling earn a half.

Away match v Truro — Monday, August 5

A GROUP of eight pairs from Launceston travelled west to challenge Truro earlier this month.

Truro is a fine parkland course, situated close to The Royal Cornwall Hospital. The golf course has a beautiful location, featuring an undulating landscape, surrounded by mature trees and Launceston enjoyed the golf, the company, and the hospitality in the clubhouse.

However Truro were much too good for them on the course, winning by six matches to two.

The bottle of wine prizes (for nearest the pin on a par-three hole) were won by Launceston’s Paddy Collier and John Myners for Truro.

The return leg at Launceston is scheduled for early October.

Cornwall Golf Union Maxam Cup at Bude and North Cornwall Golf Club — Sunday, August 11

THREE pairs — Richard Jasper and Ben Wevill, Peter Dennis and Chris Turner and Gareth Knight and Ollie James played in this 36-hole County foursomes team event on a very difficult day when one player was heard to describe a rain shower as being of biblical proportions.

Out of the 16 clubs represented, Launceston finished a very creditable sixth and Jasper and Wevill’s afternoon score of 69 was the lowest of the day and pushed them into second place in the pairs event behind Rob McGregor and Justin Barnard from Tehidy Park. The overall team winners were Trevose.
