Len Main Trophy — Tuesday, October 29

LEN Main gave this trophy to be played as a shotgun start competition with the players socialising in the clubhouse afterwards, having a meal together.

This year’s event was planned for earlier in the year but the weather took its toll so it was rearranged for last week.

Unfortunately the weather again played its part on a bitterly cold windy day with scoring made very difficult.

Winner: Chris James — 33pts; Runner-up: Francis Griffiths — 32pts; 3rd: Martin Thompson — 32pts; 4th: David Jackson — 32pts; 5th: Gavin Torbett — 32pts; 6th: Martin Ryan — 32pts.

Cornwall Bowl (second-round) v St Austell at Whitsand Bay — Sunday, November 3

ON another winter’s day, Launceston travelled to cliff top Whitsand Bay and when they arrived at the coast, the sun was out.

By the time the last of the five matches left the shelter of the clubhouse, it started to drizzle and there were a few heavy showers interspersed with drizzle for the rest of the game and for the few spectators who travelled to watch, it was quite cold standing around!

Team and club men’s captain Paul Hicks and his partner Peter Penhorwood got off to their usual quick start ending their match early, winning by 4&3, and a 2&1 victory for Joe Dickinson and Chris James.

The match was won by long-time team stalwarts Derek Basford and Ernie Best in the third game by the same scoreline as Dickinson and James. They admitted their game was a poor scrappy affair, but they were never behind.

The match was tidied up with a half for Dan Sloman and Darren Chapman and the final pair of Steve Greenaway and Ashley Rowland lost narrowly, by 2&1.

A win for neighbours Trethorne over West Cornwall sets up a local derby in the next round, which is scheduled for early January.
