Spring Medal and Putting Queen competition — Saturday, March 16

THERE was no competition last Thursday due to the adverse weather conditions, but they managed to play their Spring Medal and Putting Queen competition in windy but otherwise fine conditions on Saturday.

Club president Linda Mullins took top place with a nett score of 77 on countback from Jan Harrison. Third place was taken by Liz Hicks on 80. Jan also won the putting queen prize for the least putts taken in a round.

Cornwall Bowl Final — Sunday, March 17

AFTER an earlier postponement due to the weather and a horrendous week leading up to Sunday’s final, club members wondered if the Cornwall Bowl Final would ever be played, but the blue skies returned and although it was windy, it was not as severe as it had been during the week.

The team travelled to Trevose Golf and Country Club for the final against Whitsand Bay.

The first pairing of men’s captain Paul Hicks and Peter Penhorwood led off in style with a win but defeats for the next three pairs, Mark Fear and Rob Sweetzer-Sturt, Derek Basford and Ernie Best and previous round heroes Chris James and Darren Chapman meant the South East Cornwall club had done it.

The final pair of Joe Dickinson and Steve Greenaway took their match to add some respectability but the damage had already been done.

Club secretary, Alan Creber, said: “It was close but not quite close enough! Congratulations go to Micky Shone and his Whitsand Bay team on their victory, you were just too good for us on the day!

“It has been a tremendous team effort this year and the lads should be very proud of what they have achieved, the players above and other team members, Ian Huggins, Dan Sloman and Noel Gorman all contributed wins on the way to the final. Thank you from the club for your efforts; hopefully we’ll go one step further next year."
