County A & B Team preliminary rounds — Sunday, April 14
WITH this year’s Men’s County championships week at Mullion Golf Club in May, the early rounds of the team championships were played this past weekend.
Having reached the final last year, the A team had a bye into the quarter-final round where they faced Truro Golf Club late in the afternoon with the wind brutally whipping around the course.
With first pairing Ben Wevill and Kieran Hancock wrapping up their match by 4&2 and second pair Peter Dennis and Geoff Francis winning on the 19th hole the overall match was won and the final pair of Gareth Knight and Alan Creber coming down the 18th hole with the match level agreed an amicable half with their opponents. The team will now face Newquay in the semi-final on Saturday, May 25.
The B Team played earlier in the day and father and son Mike and Patrick Kendall led the team off with a remarkable comeback from being three holes down with three to play to win on extra holes. The second pairing of Steve Ham and Mark Cowling didn’t manage to win their match so it was left to Kev Dickinson and Charlie Ward to seal the win for the team, they will play their next game in the next round in a fortnight’s time.
