Club Championships — Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19

THE weekend of May 18 and 19 saw the ladies compete for their Club Championships.

There are two competitions — the Coronation Cup for the best two-round net score over the two days and this was won by the in-form Jan Harrison with scores of 74 and 74 for 148. Second was Bridget Christophers with 79 and 70 for 149 on countback from Wendy Briggs with 78 and 71 for 149.

In the gross score competition for the Chamber of Trade Cup, Briggs’ scores of 82 and 76 = 158 gave her the trophy from Jan whose gross scores were 79 and 79 for 158.

Home match v Bigbury — Friday, May 17

Launceston 4.5

Bigbury 1.5

UNLIKE the away fixture at Bigbury, the return match played at Launceston was played in damp, overcast conditions.  This however did not detract from a close competitive match with Launceston winning on the day by 4.5-1.5.

This score was the exact reverse of the first leg of the contest, meaning that the combined overall score is an amicable 6-6 draw.

The nearest the pin competition, rather than being one shot to a par-3 hole was played here on the par 5, 18th hole after three shots.  The Launceston winner was Peter Tunnicliffe, but no Bigbury player managed to get onto the green in three shots so the team captains agreed that the visitors’ winner would be Geoff Sharps who was one of the only pair from the South Devon club to win his match on the day.

Away match v St Austell — Monday, May 20

St Austell 3.5

Launceston 2.5

THE match was played in the usual competitive but friendly spirit, with St Austell winning their home fixture by a single point, 3.5-2.5.

Match captain for Launceston was Robin Johnson. Johnson made special mention of Terry Brown who, although playing with an injured leg, managed to finish the round, despite having to sit out a couple of hilly holes later in the game!

Brown’s playing partner, Frank Arscott, held the game together and the pair still managed a creditable victory. Nearest the pin prize for Launceston was won by Alan Bessell.

Team competition — Tuesday, May 21

WITH a number of the Seniors away on their captain’s away trip to Wales, only 42 players played in a team competition.

Winners: Alan Bessell, Graham Abrahamsen and Robin Elsender — 66pts; Runners-up: Peter Howard, Dan James and Kim Hawkey — 60pts.

Nearest the pin was won by John Smithies.

Men’s County Championships week at Mullion Golf Club

WITH the Ladies taking centre stage the week before with their club championships, there was no men’s competition played.

Last week however, Launceston’s players travelled down to Mullion Golf Club for the Men’s County Championships.

Richard Jasper finished fifth in the 36-hole qualifying round for the Individual Championships and went on to record victories in the matchplay stages before losing on the second extra hole to 16-year-old George Leigh from Trevose in the semi-final.

Leigh went on to win the 36-hole final on Sunday, beating West Cornwall’s Matt Richards by a score of 5&4. It is worth mentioning that Jasper was the only person to take Leigh as far as the last few holes of any of his matches.

B Team Championships quarter-final — Friday, May 24

HAVING won two previous rounds, the B team of Mike and Pat Kendall, Steve Ham and late replacement Baron Dorgan (in for the injured Mark Cowling) and Kevin Dickinson and Charlie Ward played the team from St Mellion in the quarter-final match.

St Mellion ran out winners by two matches to one.

A Team Championships — Saturday, May 25

WITH Richard Jasper now available having lost in the Individual Championship, the A team was strengthened and the team of Jasper (now playing his seventh round in four days), Kieran Hancock, Ben Wevill and Ben Delderfield and Peter Dennis and Chris Turner beat a strong Newquay team in the morning by two matches to one.

In the afternoon’s final, which was their second in succession, they played an even stronger team from Tehidy Park and were unable to carry the momentum through, losing all three close matches.
