Duchy Shield — Tuesday, June 11

THE seniors held their major Open competition of the year this week despite the weather trying its hardest to disrupt matters.

At 7.30am the organisers weren’t sure if it would go ahead, but of the expected 160 competitors, over 140 turned up and went out to play.

Winners of the pairs better ball competition were local pairing of Francis Griffiths and Brian Goble with 43 points, second were Trevor Stevens and Mike Richards from Whitsand Bay with 42 and third were another local pair of Roger Peek and Derek Medland with 40.

Club secretary Alan Creber said: “We would like to thank all of our sponsors for the day.”

Home match v Holsworthy — Monday, June 10

Launceston 3.5

Holsworthy 2.5

SIX pairs of golfers travelled down from Holsworthy to play the usual, four-ball, better-ball format.

The weather was rather odd for a June day with black clouds and thunder threatening over Brentor to the east. However, mother nature spared the players from the expected drenching, so none of them actually needed their leggings and waterproofs.

Holsworthy match captain, Geoff Watkins, was very complimentary about the great condition of the Launceston course. Although Watkins did suffer some club-house leg-pulling about his course navigation when he played for the third green despite teeing off on the second hole!

The final result was a win for Launceston by 3.5 to 2.5.

Nearest the pin prizes on the 150-yard, 15th hole, went to Chris Gynn for Launceston, and Ken Lau for the visitors. The return match will be played at Holsworthy in September.
