Away match v Perranporth — Monday, July 1
LAUNCESTON’S seniors travelled to Perranporth for a sunny day at the seaside at the beginning of their month.
Their matches against a side of six Perranporth pairs was lost by Launceston with style and grace. However the 6-0 loss will still have left a bitter taste for the Launceston team, and they will be keen to taste victory instead when they meet again in North Cornwall tomorrow (July 26).
A club spokesperson said: “Perhaps some trees, as opposed to Perranporth’s sand dunes and ‘blind’ shots, might give us an advantage on our course.”
The customary nearest the pin was won for Launceston by the match captain, David Bundy. David also achieved the best result for Launceston, playing with Peter Jones, losing 2&1 (two down with one hole remaining).
Away match v Teign Valley — Friday, July 12
A SMALL team of just five pairs took the trip up to Teign Valley Golf Club, set on the edge of Dartmoor, just north of Bovey Tracey.
The Devon locals were just a bit too good for Launceston, winning 3-2.
Shot of the day for Launceston came from Steve Hadfield. He was playing the 500-yard 8th hole and hit his second shot with a seven-iron to just six feet from the hole!
However, Steve’s brilliant shot did give a couple of players a surprise. This was because the match captain, Brian Goble, and his partner Gerald Cramp, were still putting when Steve’s ball rolled onto ‘their’ green! Luckily there were no injuries and the incident was accepted with good humour.
The two sides will meet again for the return match at Launceston in September.
Home match v Trevose — Monday, July 15
LAUNCESTON were hosts to eight pairs of senior golfers from Trevose recently.
Playing the traditional four-ball matchplay, the Launceston team, led by seniors captain Alan Ferguson, managed to pull off a decisive win, 6-2. The most impressive result being Rodney Duke and Dave Allan winning by 6&5 (six holes up with five remaining).
Nearest the pin prizes went to Peter Jones for Launceston and Graham Smith for Trevose.
