COUNTY champion Georgia Price warmed up for the English Women’s Amateur tournament by helping Bude and North Cornwall book a spot in the last 32 of The Mail on Sunday Classic, writes Cara Sloman.
Supporters defied heavy rain to watch Bude knock out cornish rivals Perranporth 4½-½ at home, as they took another step closer to the grand finals at El Rompido in Spain.
Georgia, playing off scratch, led the charge by seeing off former county champion and captain Jan Sargeant as she finished two up.
Hana Dabrowski looked invincible as she romped home 7&5 on the challenging links course. Jean Reed and Kay Dinsdale also chalked up big scores, winning 6&5 and 4&3 respectively.
Team Captain, Collette Burgess, who scored a half said: “We can’t stop talking about it. We don’t want to stop.”
The former county squash champion stressed how lucky the team were to have Georgia, whose ambition is to turn professional.
Collette said: “We feel privileged to have her. She puts a lot back into the club. She’s a brilliant member and a really lovely girl. We’re all routing for her.”
Earlier this year the club held a fundraising day for Georgia to help with a busy summer that sees her competing at the English Women’s Amateur event and in the English Women’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship.
Geogia, who won the county championship in April, was also third in The Astor Salver, fifth in The Critchley Salver and 16th in the Welsh Ladies this year.
It is not the first time Bude have reached the later rounds of the world’s largest golf club team event. Three years ago they made it through to the eighth round.
To make sure they are on top of their game the side are having training sessions with club professional Nick Cook.
Collette said: “We’re having a little bit of coaching in between matches. It’s a very exciting competition, especially as you progress. We’ve got such an enthusiastic team.”
