THE cricket season got off to a delayed start for Glangrwyney CC on Saturday with the first XI home to Dales CC.

Meanwhile the newly formed second XI travelled to Kington. Both teams recorded victories after last week's cancellations.

At Glangrwyney, captain Mike Devoy won the toss and had no hesitation in asking Dales to bat first. Dales struggled for runs in the face of excellent opening spells from Huw Griffiths and Devoy. Griffiths deserved more than the one wicket he took in 12 overs for just 14 runs and Devoy took two for 24. The slow scoring continued as Luke Bowen, Gethin Price and Richard James maintained the stranglehold on the Dales batsmen. Price took two for 13 in his seven overs. Dales ended their 45 overs on 110 for six.

After tea Glangrwyney opened their innings with debutant Luke Bowen and seasoned campaigner Paul Daniell who had earlier performed well behind the stumps. Batting proved equally as difficult for the home team as Dales bowlers Gore and Jones between them bowled 20 overs for just 29 runs. Although behind the clock, crucially Glangrwyney only lost the wicket, Daniell for 19. Tim Jones came in and upped the scoring rate with 22 before becoming the first of three victims for Dales young spinner Ellis. When Bowen departed for 39 after an innings of great concentration, the home side still needed 20 to win. This was achieved with three overs to spare as Geoff Holmes and Devoy ended seven and 14 not out respectively.

On Saturday the first XI travel to Llandrindod as the second XI host Hay on Wye.

The club has a big event this Sunday when they play in the first round of the National Village Cup. Visitors to Cwrt-y-Gollen will be Colwall, one of the strongest sides in the region. Spectators are welcome for the game which starts at 1pm.
