A record number of girls took to the crease at Haverfordwest Cricket Club this month.

Over 200 youngsters from 19 county primary schools took part in the fourth annual Pembrokeshire Girls Kwik Cricket Finals Day.

Sponsored by Valero, three schools qualified from the competition to represent Pembrokeshire in the South Wales finals.

Cleddau Reach, Fenton and Tavernspite will play in Cardiff on July 7.

Matt Freeman, cricket development officer for Sport Pembrokeshire, said girls cricket was going from strength to strength due in part to the work carried out by Pembrokeshire Cricket Wales community coach, Rick Walton.

"It's so good to see more and more girls taking up the game and that standards of play are rising," he said.

"The matches played throughout finals day were extremely close and competitive but played in a fun relaxed manner.

"And who knows how many of them will progress to play for Wales in the future."

Stephen Thornton, of Valero, presented certificates and t-shirts to all the players at the finals day.
