East Cornwall League round-up
DARREN Webber was the hero as North Petherwin’s first ever game in Senior football ended with a brilliant 5-2 victory at Plymouth Marjon Reserves in the East Cornwall League.
After Marjon took a tenth minute lead, Webber, a summer signing from Devon and Exeter League side Halwill, took centre stage, finishing off a free-kick routine before smashing home following a long clearance down field.
Webber grabbed his hat-trick before the break as the Badgers went in 3-1 ahead.
Marjon created numerous second-half chances but could only cut the deficit in half before Webber struck twice more before the final whistle to get Wayne Basford’s men off to a great start.
Last year’s East Cornwall League Division One runners-up St Minver met last year’s East Cornwall Division One winners St Stephen and came out on top, 7-1.
St Stephen have lost a number of key players in the off-season and it showed as the hosts ran wild.
Ross Beare and Steve Wootton were both on target twice with Callum Wilson, Ozzie Beesley and Ed Green also on the scoresheet.
St Teath have had a difficult time of it in recent years, including coming last in East Cornwall Division One last year.
Although they lost their opener at home to Padstow United in a seven-goal thriller, it took a last minute penalty from Daniel Colwill to separate them.
Mike Shearer scored twice for the home side with Danny Smith also on target.
