Elburton Villa 0

THE Clarets bounced back to form with a convincing victory over Elburton Villa at Pennygillam on Saturday.

Mike Steele and Mike Burke both dropped to the bench following last week’s defeat at Cullompton Rangers and were replaced by Travis Skerton and Marius Pislaru.

The game flared into life right from the off when a strong challenge saw Clarets dangerman Tallan Mitchell sent crashing into the grandstand retaining wall. It looked nasty but after a few minutes he was able to continue.

Launceston were generally in control throughout a slow first-half but without seriously threatening Jack Dixon, in goal for the visitors.

The game burst into life just before the break. Josh Tattersall’s corner hit the crossbar but keeper Josh Colwill recovered quickly to feed Pislaru, a prolific scorer for the club’s second team in the East Cornwall League Premier Division. The Romanian striker checked inside and from 18 yards fired an accurate drive into the corner of Dixon’s net. It was his first SWPL goal and a great way to get off the mark.

Colwill preserved the lead with a flying save to deny Tattersall and the Clarets went into the interval with a precious 1-0 lead.

With the swirling wind mostly behind them, Launceston dominated the second period. Skerton was proving a real handful for the Villa defence. He hit the post from a Jack Lee cross before heading inches wide with Dixon beaten. But the pressure told when the young striker was hauled down for a clear penalty, converted by top-scorer Jordan Walton.

After 71 minutes the visitors were awarded a penalty of their own when Callum Watson was penalised for an innocuous-looking push. However Jordan Rundle dragged his spot-kick well wide. Substitute Sam Hepworth came on and made the points safe, lashing home a loose ball from ten yards.

This was a much-improved Launceston performance which lifted them clear of Camelford in the league table and sets the club up nicely for the big game at Callington on Good Friday (11am). The Clarets conclude their 2018/19 fixtures with an Easter Monday home game against basement club Sticker (11am).

Holsworthy 2

Mousehole 3

GERENS James’ 92nd minute winner gave Mousehole all three points and sent Holsworthy to defeat in their final home game of the season.

Mousehole dominated possession in the early stages and they created a couple of chances which were either blocked or saved by Ryan Chadwick.

Eventually the Magpies grew into the game and took the lead on 21 minutes. After Harry Barrett was fouled, Joe Barker sent in a delightful ball for centre-half Lee Gardiner to power home at the back-post.

From the restart, Mousehole responded straight away breaking down the right-hand side before crossing in for the prolific James to tuck the ball home.

The West Cornwall side had a lot of the ball but Liam Dart’s side created opportunities. Barker saw a shot saved as did Max MacDonald. However, Holsworthy lost striker Brad Birch to a season-ending ankle ligament injury, before replacement Dom Abbott saw a header blocked on the line.

Chadwick saved well from James, while skipper Carlo Chandler and Gardiner defended heroically at times in the centre of the Holsworthy defence.

In the second-half, the Devon side dominated possession playing on the front foot. Abbott headed just over while Barrett and John Elvins saw shots blocked before Barker headed home from Jay Thomas’ fantastic delivery on 61 minutes.

The hosts were all over Mousehole and missed further chances to make it 3-1. MacDonald, Barrett and Barker forced the goalkeeper into smart saves while Chandler went close.

On 75 minutes, a wrongly-given corner was delivered and giant centre-back James Williams rose highest to head in.

In the final stages Mousehole dominated possession but Holsworthy held strong as Gardiner threw his head in the way of a rasping drive from Paulo Souza and Chadwick made two brilliant saves.

However in the 92nd minute after clearing the initial corner, the second ball was delivered back in and after a scramble, James forced the ball home via the crossbar to give the village club a precious win in the battle for the runners-up spot.

Manager Liam Dart was delighted with his players’ efforts.

He said: “After a superb performance against arguably since Christmas the best team in the league, it was gutting to not claim at least a point if not all three. I’m gutted to concede a last minute goal as we were superb throughout. Every player followed the gameplan and tried to play football in the right way. Lee Gardiner and captain Carlo Chandler were brilliant with Carlo the star man, he was outstanding. All of the players were brilliant, we just couldn’t get the third goal when we were on top at the start of the second-half.”

Holsworthy have their penultimate league game of the season tomorrow (Good Friday) when they travel to neighbours Bude Town (11am) before concluding their campaign at basement side Ludgvan next Saturday.
