St Piran League East

Liskeard Athletic Reserves 0

Morwenstow 2

MORWENSTOW travelled back from Lux Park in high spirits last Wednesday evening, after coming away with three points and a clean sheet in what was a close affair at Liskeard Athletic Reserves.

The first-half finished 0-0 and the Greens were lucky to come into the dressing room with the score level, after Liskeard missed a penalty within the first 15 minutes following Mark Skelton being penalised for handball at a corner. Morwenstow had plenty of possession before the break but were wasteful with their passing to cause any real problems, most of their chances coming from long-range.

The second-half was a much better display from the visitors, as they looked more settled and gave the home side a lot more to think about.

The first goal of the evening came from a set piece, as a corner kick in the 53rd minute found its way to centre-back Arron Bailey, who grabbed his first goal of the season.

Liskeard almost equalised from a corner themselves shortly after, but goalkeeper Aaron Gregory pulled off a smart save down to his right to keep Morwenstow in front.

The second goal closed the game off in the 75th minute, as a long ball found its way to striker Gavin Carter out wide, who lashed it across the six-yard-box, allowing the experienced Paul Jenkin to finish from close range.

The Blues continued to push for a goal in the latter stages of the game, but a sound defensive performance gave the North Cornwall side their first clean sheet of the season and moved them to fourth.

St Piran League East round-up

LAUNCESTON Reserves are up to third in St Piran League East after a controversial 2-1 victory at fellow high-flyers St Mawgan.

The Clarets went in front when Romanian striker Marius Pislaru beat a couple of players before firing in from close-range.

The hosts equalised before the break through Oliver Morrison and it looked as if Launceston were going to be held.

However they were awarded a penalty late on when referee Darren Winksworth spotted a shirt tug from a free-kick.

Pislaru missed his first kick but Winksworth ordered a retake after four home players had encroached in the box.

The second time was successful and the Clarets had pinched the points.

Morwenstow came crashing back to reality after giving Sticker Reserves their first points of the season.

The Greens began the long journey down to Burngullow Park in high spirits after being unbeaten in their last five fixtures, coming up against a side that had yet to get any points on the board. However, their elation was soon disrupted after conceding within the first five minutes of play. The youthful home-side managed to undo their opponent’s offside-trap and finish into the bottom corner, courtesy of Thomas Hocking.

The first-half went from bad to worse for Morwenstow on 22 minutes as a cross found the free head of striker James Martin to make it two.

Shortly after, a free-kick on the edge of the visitors’ 18-yard-box was superbly dipped over the defensive wall and into the net by Dan Hocking.

After half-time and a change in formation, Morwenstow managed to get a foothold in the game. Gavin Carter was fouled in the box and Aidan Davis calmly slotted the penalty both first and second time of asking — as the referee deemed an infringement in the box and blew for a retake.

A highly controversial moment could have seen the North Cornwall outfit come back into the game, as they claimed a ball to be over the line, but the referee didn’t agree. After bombarding the Sticker goal with relentless corners and hitting the woodwork through Arron Bailey, it was clear there was only going to be one winner.

The final nail in the coffin came when a free-kick found the feet of striker Thomas Hocking to make it four and deservedly gave the home-side all three points.

Bude Town picked up their first home win of the season with a convincing 4-0 win over St Dennis Reserves to move up to seventh.

On an emotional day where there was a minute’s silence for lifelong supporter Gordon Brown, Scott Percy made it ten goals in just three games with a brace while Jack Oxley and Dan Starkey were also on target for the Seasiders.

Callington Town Reserves fell to a 4-1 defeat at their St Austell counterparts in a game which was closer than the scoreline suggests.

Cally have a young side this year and went two-goals down through Cameron Bishop and ex-Camelford man Cam Bidgood, before Alex Jacob reduced the arrears and hit the crossbar.

However, Bishop restored their two-goal cushion before Owen Pearce added a fourth late on.
