SWPL PREMIER WEST (SATURDAY)
Holsworthy 3 Wadebridge Town 0
THE Magpies secured their first win of the season with a superb 3-0 victory over Wadebridge Town at Upcott Field.
New boss Kevin Squire had seen his side draw 1-1 with Launceston on the opening day and he brought Jay Thomas and Todd Peschke into the starting 11 with Sam Hill unavailable and Kieran Jollow on the bench.
Holsworthy started downhill against a strong wind and started well, taking the lead on five minutes as a long throw was flicked in by skipper Jedd Peschke.
The Magpies continued to create chances over the next half an hour through Craig Duff, Will Harris and Ben Sharpe, the latter after a fine team move involving Thomas and Duff ended with Carter sending in a cross that Sharpe could only nod wide.
The visitors gradually got into their stride in the final ten minutes of the half, but after the break it was Holsworthy who again were on top and got their rewards on the hour as Sharpe found the bottom corner.
The Bridgers, who have Magpies legends Ryan Hall and Richard Haydon as part of their new management team, made a series of substitutions, but it was 3-0 with 20 to play, and what a goal it was as Carter’s first time shot from 25 yards flew into the top corner.
Holsworthy were then able to make their substitutions and the hard work continued.
One of those, Elis Aldrich had a glorious chance to add a fourth, but the defender just did enough to put him off when he seemed certain to score.
The visitors did test Ryan Chadwick twice late on, but he was in determined mood as he and the team earned their first clean sheet of the season.
Reflecting on the afternoon, Holsworthy boss Kevin Squire told the Post: “I thought it was a fully deserved win and a brilliant performance all round.
“The team listened to the gameplan and carried it out really well. Wadebridge have experience in there team and our players worked so hard in stopping them getting in any rhythm, and apart from the last 10 mins of the first half, we dominated in many areas of the pitch.
If I’m honest, we could easily have had two or three more goals as the chances we created were very, very good.”

He continued: “The back line with Todd, Jedd and Callum Martyn didn’t give their front players a sniff.
“The midfield worked really hard and our wide players also nullified some very good players while making an impact going forward.
“And not to forget the strikers – Craig Duff and Ben Sharpe. They worked so hard to stop them playing and really gave the team a platform to play with hard work and that bit of quality. I was so pleased for Sharpey with his goal, he really wanted that!”
Holsworthy are on their travels this weekend when they head to Millbrook (3pm).
Squire concluded: “I’m really happy for the players, we will enjoy this week before turning our attention to Saturday and another tough game.”
