Edgcumbe 0
Launceston 1
EDGCUMBE passed up a great opportunity to take over at the top of the table with this shock defeat against the league’s basement club.
Having won the away match 2-1 recently, Edgcumbe expected to clinch the victory but despite dominating the game they failed to take their chances, largely due to the outstanding work of goalkeeper Paul Hider.
It’s safe to say that Launceston made the most of other local sides’ fixtures being postponed to field a very capable outfit — one being St Austell ‘keeper Hider — and if they had that team every week, they would not be in the position they are now.
On a decent Millbay Park pitch the game was remarkably end to end but missed chances by Jake Foster, Ryan Knight and James Cook cost the home side dearly as the only goal of the game came five minutes before half-time.
A mistake by goalkeeper Richard Ferry proved pivotal as he failed to deal with a Mikey Steale effort which resulted in Tom Ellacott forcing the ball into the net from close range.
The second half was similar to the first with Edgcumbe creating a number of chances but ultimately coming to nothing.
They did have a golden chance to draw level when a foul by Hider led to Danny Medlin stepping up to take the penalty kick.
He decided to blast the ball down the middle of the goal but the ball smashed into Hider, who pulled off a remarkable save.
Unfortunately for Edgcumbe, it was the visitors who held on for the three points to end a run of nine successive defeats.
