HOLSWORTHY boss Kevin Squire hailed his heroes as they rounded off a remarkable week by seeing off in-form Callington Town 3-1 on Saturday in South West Peninsula League Premier West.
The Magpies had reached their first-ever Devon St Luke’s Bowl final on Tuesday night with a penalty shoot-out success over Southern League Bideford, and backed that up by a recording a third straight league victory which gives them a chance of finishing inside the top six.
Saturday’s clash wasn’t one for the purists with chances at a premium throughout. Holsworthy barely creating an opportunity of note before conceding 49 minutes in when a long ball forward wasn’t dealt with properly, allowing Kieran Prescott to fire in from close-range.
That theme continued until the 72nd minute when they levelled when an inswinging corner from Jay Thomas deceived the Cally defence and the linesman adjudged the ball to have crossed the line.
Then, almost straight from the restart, the Devonians were in front.
The excellent Rory Simmons won the ball in midfield, and drove forward before finding home man-of-the-match Ben Sharpe out on the right. He played a one-two with frontman Craig Duff before finding the corner from 18 yards.
Suddenly finding their attacking confidence again, Holsworthy grabbed a third 10 minutes from time with a classic route-one goal.

Keeper Ryan Chadwick launched the ball forward, left-sided attacker Brad Ausden got in behind some poor Callington defending and then applying the finish from the edge of the box.
The Magpies then played the game out with no further alarm as they enjoy a fine end to March.
Squire admitted it had been a fine few days for the club, who welcome neighbours Bude Town on Good Friday morning (11am).
He said: “That’s three league wins in a row now and four wins in a row if you include the semi-final win on penalties, so we’re going well.
“The mood in the squad is brilliant and we just can’t wait for the next game at the moment.
“We’ve done well against some good teams and although we weren’t at our best on Saturday, we kept going and got our rewards.”
Holsworthy visit runaway leaders Liskeard Athletic tomorrow night (7.30pm) before the Bude derby but Squire goes in confident.
He said: “Obviously we’ve got a really tricky game at Liskeard on Tuesday, and I’m hoping we’ll give them a much better game than we did at home.
“But we’re going there in great form, so let’s hope we can get a positive result before Friday which is always a big game for the club.”
Holsworthy were edged out 1-0 back on Boxing Day thanks to Dylan Morgan’s brilliant late finish, but Squire hopes entertainment will be in far bigger supply at Upcott Field.
That game wasn’t a classic by any stretch, but every game we go into I try to set up to attack, but sometimes it just doesn’t happen.
“We didn’t play very well that day so hopefully we can put that right and give our supporters something to cheer.”
