St Piran League East weekly round-up

Tuesday, August 27

MORWENSTOW produced a stirring second-half performance to earn a 2-2 draw at Launceston Reserves on Tuesday night.

Played in perfect conditions and in front of a decent sized crowd, the Clarets went in front inside a minute as a cross from the left by Alex Moore was headed home by midfielder Gareth Jones.

The hosts were well on top in the early stages but visiting keeper Michael Sampson was rarely called upon despite a couple of close shaves.

As the half went on, the Greens grew into the game — striker Gavin Carter forced goalkeeper Nick Oldaker into a fine save low down to his left while Matt Carter should have done better at the back-post from six-yards.

The second-half was dominated by Morwenstow as the hosts tired.

Despite this, Launceston doubled their lead from the penalty spot when the impressive Mark Elvidge fired in for his fifth in just four games.

Launceston’s inability to keep the ball started to cost them and the lead was halved when skipper Gary Walter planted a brilliant long-range free-kick home from 35 yards.

Oldaker was forced into a great block from close-range, but he couldn’t do anything about the equaliser with 13 minutes to go.

Gavin Carter was played through and he kept his cool to lob it over the advancing Oldaker and into the right-hand corner.

Both sides had chances to win it but they each had to settle for a point.

Callington Town Reserves bounced back from successive 5-0 defeats with a deserved 4-1 victory over Saltash Borough 4-1 at Ginsters Marsh.

The side, made up mainly of teenagers, were soon in their stride and led 3-0 at the break with goals from Corey Distin and a brace from Andre Rodyukov on his return from injury.

Although Borough got a goal back early in the second-half, Distin restored the three-goal advantage and they held on for the victory.

SCOTT Percy scored four times as Bude made it successive away wins in St Piran League East with a 7-0 hammering of Wadebridge Town Reserves last Wednesday.

Although the Seasiders’ had only picked up one point from home clashes with St Austell Reserves and Millbrook Reserves, Josh Allen’s men made it seven points from four games with Percy notching a first-half treble.

Percy’s fourth and Tommy Statton made it five inside 51 minutes before an own goal and Ruan Tape’s 92nd minute effort made it seven.

LAUNCESTON Reserves were the only winners from the Post area on Saturday as they won 3-1 at their Millbrook counterparts.

With the wind behind them, the Clarets led 2-0 at half-time thanks to goals from Marius Pislaru and Mark Elvidge.

The hosts responded after the break and pulled one back, but Pislaru’s striker shortly before the end ensured the points were coming back to North Cornwall.

Morwenstow once again came back from 2-0 down to grab a point for the second time in four days as they held Polperro.

The hosts employed three centre-backs in a bid to contain their talented visitors, but fell behind when Kieran Faulkner fired in a free-kick on the stroke of half-time.

The Greens missed a glorious chance to equalise after the break when Norman Foster put his shot wide when sent clean through.

The East Cornwall side went 2-0 up on 64 minutes through Jack Puckey but Foster halved the deficit on 70 minutes when his shot from inside the box was saved before collecting the rebound, dropping his shoulder and placing the ball into the back of the net.

The leveller came with ten minutes to go as Gary Walter — his third goal in as many games — fired in a 25-yard free-kick. The home side were unlucky not to steal away all three points from the visitors, as the final whistle came too early.

Bude Town lost on Saturday in a nine goal thriller, after they fell to a surprise 6-3 defeat at Saltash Borough. The in-form Scott Percy scored a brace to reduce the scoreline and Harley Westlake was also on target. The home side were 3-0 up before the Seasiders brought one back in the 35th minute. However, the men in blue conceded a third goal from Charlie Hine two minutes later to make it 4-1. Bude did manage to score again before half time to keep themselves within the tie. However, the second-half was much like the first and the home side saw the game to bed to pick up their fist win of the new season.

Four defensive errors cost Callington Reserves’ young side early as they lost on their travel to St Dennis Reserves. The game was a close affair, finishing up 4-3, leaving Callington kicking their heels that they didn’t manage to come away with at least a point.

But there continue to be signs of improvement for the side largely full of teenagers as they battled from first to last. Ross Jarvis hit two goals with Alex May adding a third.
