FA Vase — Fourth Round
Bodmin Town 1
Ipswich Wanderers 3
BODMIN Town’s FA Vase journey was brought to an end in the fourth round as they lost a long awaited tie 3-1 at home to Ipswich Wanderers.
The Eastern Counties Premier division side progressed at Priory Park to set up a home match against Bowers and Pitsea FC in the next round.
The hosts though got off to the perfect start as they opened the scoring after just 14 minutes when top scorer Andrew ‘Rocky’ Neal fired them in from with a neat finish across the goalkeeper and into the bottom left corner of the net.
Ipswich grew into the game more and two goals in the space of nine minutes gave them a 2-1 half-time lead.
Jack Severy drew them level with a header on 34 minutes before Ross Myhill was left free at the far post to put the away side in front at the break.
Bodmin spent the second half chasing a goal and with Adam Carter on as a substitute the play was largely lodged in the visitors’ half.
With half an hour to go, the onslaught of home attacks seemed to take their toll on what was a resolute Ipswich back four as left winger Nick Hurst burst into the box and appeared to be grounded via the outstretched leg of Craig Stuart, only for Plymouth-based referee Lee Roberts to brandish Hurst with a yellow card for diving — a decision that bemused the home outfit as well as the majority in the crowd of 282.
Looking deflated after their way back into the game was denied, Bodmin’s hopes eventually evaporated with Ipswich adding a third 15 minutes from time when Tom Bradlaugh scored from the penalty spot after Steve Simmonds was adjudged to have fouled in the box.
Bodmin still went on to create a host of chances, but with the ball pinballing around the box, Bodmin just couldn’t force it over the Ipswich goal-line and with that the final whistle sounded, ending Bodmin’s hopes of flying the Cornish flag into the next stage of the competition.
