South West Peninsula Premier

St Austell 2

ST AUSTELL remain six points clear at the top of the Peninsula Premier League after a come-from-behind 2-1 victory at Launceston.

The Lilywhites had chances early on and came close when left back Martin Watts saw his freekick canon off the post, but in a half that Launceston probably shaded, they deservedly took the lead on 37 minutes through Andy Elcock, who broke down the right wing before firing into the corner from 20 yards.

The lead however did not last until the interval, and just before the whistle blew St Austell were level when Watt’s searching cross was headed into his own net by Clarets’ defender Joe Smith.

Just four minutes into the second half the game was turned on its head when Liam Eddy picked the ball up in midfield, beat a couple of players and shot past Ollie Chenoweth in the Launceston goal.

Neither side could take control in the remainder of the game which turned into a midfield battle as St Austell held on to pick up a vital three points in the title race.
