SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE PREMIER WEST
Launceston 1 Sticker 3
Launceston brought down the curtain on a difficult season on Saturday as they went down 3-1 to visiting Sticker at Pennygillam.
The visitors arrived as the league’s in-form team, having won their last five games, and after starting strongly, moved in front when the experienced Ollie Brokenshire flicked in a neat header from a corner.
The Clarets soon settled although the visitors largely controlled the first half, played in warm, sunny conditions on an excellent surface.
Sticker led 1-0 at the break but Lee Robinson scored his sixth goal in eight games to bring the Clarets level. The big striker rose well to power in a 48th minute header from a corner.
Kian Berry was behind many of Launceston’s better attacking moments, but it was the visitors who scored the game’s decisive goal when Sol Wilson fired past Howie Evans and into the far corner.
The Clarets were still right in the contest and could have equalised when Berry pulled back an accurate cross. But although Will Gilbert made good contact, his shot flew just over the crossbar.
Alfie Fothergill appeared to be brought down on the edge of the penalty area but the referee waved play on, and in the 82nd minute the visitors made the game safe when substitute Tom Guest turned in a left-wing cross on the near post.
For Launceston the excellent Howie Evans, never afraid to leave his area, gave another energetic and highly-effective display of goalkeeping.
An enjoyable game ended with Sticker deservedly taking all three points to extend their winning run and close their season very much on the front foot.
