Falmouth Town 5

A CAMELFORD side missing several regulars, fell to a heavy defeat at Falmouth Town in a game which was married by a dreadful injury to Bobby Hopkinson just six minutes into the game.

Hopkinson, the Camels’ leading goalscorer, stretched for a ball with nobody around him and suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle, which meant the game was delayed for nearly an hour.

Once the action resumed, the hosts took the lead through Joe Cooper’s header from a corner before Camelford midfielder Josh Insley headed another corner past his own goalkeeper, Luke Gwillam, from ten yards.

With injuries piling up, the Camels, who had won their previous five games to move into the top six, needed to keep it as tight as possible but conceded a third on 47 minutes as David Broglino’s shot from the edge of the area found its way in.

Ten minutes later Gwillam should have done better with Luke Brabyn’s shot from 20 yards.

Camelford’s 52-year-old assistant manager Phil Brown was forced to go up front for the last 20 minutes, and Falmouth ensured a fifth before the end as a cross to the back-post was superbly volleyed in by Jack Bowyer.

St Austell 1

Camelford 1

CAMELFORD put in a superb away performance to hold leaders St Austell to a 1-1 draw at Poltair on Saturday.

The Camels arrived on the back of a 5-0 defeat at Falmouth which saw striker Bobby Hopkinson ruled out for the rest of the season with a broken leg and dislocated ankle.

However manager Reg Hambly was able to call upon Ed Harrison, Andy Boxall and Mark Gusterson and it made a big difference.

The first-half was a fairly attritional affair, although both sides had good chances to go in front.

Midfielder Josh Insley hit the post from a Harrison corner for the Camels, while St Austell’s top-scorer Hayden Turner shot wide when sent through one-on-one with Luke Gwillam.

The Camels took the lead in the 52nd minute as defender Leighton smashed the ball in from close range from Boxall’s free-kick.

However their lead was short-lived as seven minutes later the Lillywhites drew level.

A cross from the right from Will Tinsley was misjudged by Gwillam, allowing Dan Perryman the chance to ram the ball in.

Camelford regained their composure and finished the stronger with Boxall’s 20-yard drive going just wide and Carhart having an effort blocked.

Camelford are in League Cup action this Saturday when they head to East Devon to tackle Elmore Eagles (3pm).
