St Dennis 1
CAMELFORD built on their superb 1-1 draw at St Austell on Saturday by beating struggling St Dennis 2-1 at Trefrew Park last night.
The Camels have been in excellent form in recent weeks besides a 5-0 defeat at Falmouth Town last Wednesday, and were able to call upon Bude Town striker Scott Percy, who is now dual-registered with the two clubs after a prolific run of form in the St Piran League (East).
St Dennis had conceded a staggering 25 goals in just three matches, but recently won a seven-goal thriller under the floodlights at Launceston.
However Reg Hambly’s Camelford took control from the start, but crucially for the Saints, goalkeeper James Hunkin only had plenty of comfortable saves to make.
The Saints should have gone in front inside ten minutes as in-form striker Jacob Rowe was denied by a great save from Luke Gwillam, after Rowe sent in one-on-one.
That seemed to spark the Camels and they took the lead inside 15 minutes as a good move down the right saw Jack Lawrence’s cross headed home at the far-post by Andy Boxall.
Their lead was doubled five minutes before half-time as Kian Burns curled in a superb free-kick into the far corner from the edge of the box after he was fouled, following a fine pass by full-back Tom McLachlan.
The second-half continued in the same vain with the Camels on top but St Dennis looking dangerous on occasion.
Lawrence had a couple of good chances while former skipper Dan Balsdon, making a rare appearance, saw his shot held by Hunkin.
As often is the case when a team dominates and fails to kill the game off, the other team go up the other end and score.
Rowe did exactly that as he fired in from ten yards following a nice counter-attack down the right.
St Dennis then lumped a few balls into the Camels box, but the hosts held on for an important three points in the race for a top six finish.
Camelford are back in action on Saturday when they head to Horsdon Park to tackle Premier East side Elmore in the second-round of the Walter C Parson Funeral Directors League Cup.
