Buildbase FA Vase (second qualifying round)
Ashton & Backwell United 1
REG Hambly’s Camelford put in a superb performance to reach the first-round of this year’s FA Vase.
The Camels flew out of the traps against their Somerset opponents with Bobby Hopkinson, Ed Harrison and Kian Burns all going close.
Ashton & Backwell gradually grew into the contest but found themselves a goal down at the break as goalkeeper Lewis Coombes failed to hold on to Hopkinson’s free-kick, allowing skipper Adam Sleep to sweep the ball into the back of the net.
The Western League Division One outfit probed away after the break but rarely failed to trouble Luke Gwillam.
Hopkinson’s superb run of form continued as he blasted a 25-yard free-kick into the top corner to give them a 2-0 cushion.
Calum Townsend’s penalty midway through the half gave Ashton hope and although they peppered balls into the Camels box, there was no way through as the North Cornwall side enjoyed their big day out in the sun.
Their reward is a home tie with Western Premier outfit Buckland Athletic on Saturday, October 12 (3pm).
