South West Women’s Football League

Premier Division

Middlezoy 0

ALTHOUGH the table will no doubt change in the coming weeks, with teams in the top four having games in hand, Callington moved to their highest position of the season with Sunday’s thrashing of Middlezoy.

teams were without key players for this fixture but it was Callington’s strong depth to their squad which made the big difference.

The game was played on 3G at Tavistock College and got off to a decent start for the hosts as they were creating a series of excellent chances inside the opening 10 minutes.

In an increasingly frustrating opening half-hour, Callington struggled to find their cutting edge in front of goal, despite dominating possession of the ball in good attacking territory.

Eventually, they broke the deadlock when midfielder Gemma Farley chipped the ball to an unmarked Adele Brown, who composed herself and placed her half-volley into the bottom corner.

The goal seemed to settle the home side and soon they doubled their lead when Lucy Jones set up Eleri Griffiths to finish well.

Despite Callington’s dominance and a very quiet afternoon for Sara Rowe in Town’s goal, it remained just 2-0 up to the half-time break.

Callington came out in the second-half with slightly more purpose but still found Middlezoy hard to break down, as at this point they were reduced to 10 players due to injury and naturally resorted to sitting deep with everyone behind the ball.

Finally Chloe Williams got Callington off and scoring again, when her low driven cross crept in at the back post. Brown made it 4-0 soon after when she lashed home a loose ball inside the area. At the other end in a rare break away, Callington were given a wake-up call when a counter-attack saw an effort rattle the crossbar.

On 70 minutes Lucy Jones set-up Griffiths who made it 5-0 with a clinical finish. The strike took the young forward into double figures for the season. Next up to get in on the goalscoring action was substitute Lisa Pearce, as her brilliant turn and finish into the bottom corner made it 6-0.

The rout was completed when Tyler Matthews played in Williams and the striker buried her shot into the far corner of the net, taking her personal tally to 15 for the season.

Leaders Keynsham Town Development are the visitors next Sunday (2pm).
