THERE was a good turnout from the Saltash dinghies this week, with 17 in the Topper class and 10 in the Medium Handicap fleet, as well as the Lasers.

They were set a course down river and around Trot buoy in the evening sunshine.

Helen Peat in the Albacore won the Medium Handicap and James Torr was the first Laser. Tamsyn Hills was the fastest Topper, with Danni Middleton in second place and Jack Wickham pipping Alice Barrow to third by only two seconds. Danni's mother, Tamzine, was also placed second, in the Laser class.

The yachts had a strong flood tide to beat against on their first leg, favouring faster boats. Neville Devonport's Musk Ox led the IRC fleet on a course three times around Mud, Camel's Head and Lynher buoys then up to the club line but was beaten on handicap by Mike Anning's Revihan.

Similarly, in the PY fleet Marcus Anderson in Pathfinder led all the way only for Mike Gaved's Tean to win on corrected time by less than half a minute.

All nine J24s turned out: Dogs Jorrocks, helmed by Darren Stansbury this week, maintaining her lead from Jabberwocky and Jiffi, who were separated by only two seconds at the finish. Majic and Jo Jo went aground but still managed to complete the course. The final race of the Spring Series was an Olympic Triangle course sailed in light wind and rain in the Sound, requiring concentration from the skippers. Phil Hooper's Joburg, the smallest boat in the IRC fleet, chose a port hand flyer at the start, off Melampus buoy, and only missed a win by 11 seconds, but IRC success overall went to Neil Trathen's Elusive and the J24 winner overall was Dave Cooper in Jawbreaker.

Matt Baker's Wombat took the honours for the Series in the MOCRA multihull class where excitement was provided by Simon Baker's brand new boat Hissy Fit, launched only this week, which took third place on the day and second place in the bottle race back up river to the club.
