LEVEL 1 and 2 Sport Instructor Training Programme students at Duchy College have planned and independently delivered a series of ‘get active’ sports session to a group of adult residents with additional needs from the Bowden Derra Residential Home.

Activities in the sessions included Jingle Ball, Giant Ball Bowling, Target Games and Parachute Activities. It is a great opportunity for the students to gain coaching experience in ‘real life’ situations and gain evidence for their NVQ portfolio.

Student, Katie Pengelly, said: “I love doing this course, I want to go on and do coaching in the future and I feel this course is very beneficial for that. The group from Bowden Derra are brilliant, very enthusiastic and it is great working with them. It is giving me insight into how to deal with different situations in the future.”

Team Lead for Sport at Duchy College, Darren Evans, said: “The students gained some valuable experiences during the practical sports coaching session and it was great to see them coming out of their shell during this time.

“Their confidence levels have come on a great deal in the last few months and it’s pleasing to see the students putting what they have learnt into practice.”

Skills for Life Tutor, Kellie Miller, said: “It is excellent to see the residents of Bowden Derra taking part in the activities on offer. They all enjoyed themselves in the first few sessions.”

The Level 1 and 2 Sports Instructor Training Programme is a practical based course designed to allow students to gain lot of‘work related’ experience within the sports industry.

Alongside the main qualification, NVQ in Activity Leadership, the students have the opportunity to work in a variety of vocationally contextualised situations both within coaching and leisure management.
