DEVON's strength in depth came to the fore in the under 18s' win over their Cornish counterparts at Launceston last week. The final score of 10.5 - 4.5 emphasised the gulf between the two counties, though Cornwall had high hopes going into the fixture, having beaten Devon in a friendly at Thurlestone and finishing above them in the Six Counties event earlier in the year. It was not to be however, with Niall Hutton and Jamie Crocker losing 4&3; Josh Chaplin and James Wirth losing 4&3; and Jake Finn and Joe Miners losing one down in the morning foursomes. There was though a win for Connor Jenkins and Kieran Faulkner, and a fighting half for Jared Mortimore and Ben Browning. Being 1.5-3.5 down after the morning session meant the afternoon's action was always going to be a battle. Despite trying hard, Connor and Josh both lost 5&4; Jared lost 4&3; Kieran lost by one hole; Ben lost 2&1; Joe lost 3&1; and after a strong fightback, James was unlucky to lose on the 18th. There were positive results for Niall, who won 2&1; Jake, who won 3&2; and Jamie, who won 2up. It was a disappointing result for Cornwall, despite some decent performances, and sees them finish bottom of the three county group in the Roy Greenaway Trophy competition.
