YSTRADGYNLAIS RFC had a day to remember on Saturday with the first team inspired by the youth teams Millennium victory in the morning to book their own date this May bank holiday.
If this game had been a film it would certainly have been called the great escape and Steve McQueen would have been played by winger Bowdy Davies.
The most physical battle Ystradgynlais have faced in many years was certainly a testament to both clubs. The Blues started the strongest scoring a wonderful opening try through Bowdy Davies.
Ystrad looked to be dominating the first quarter but huge concern was evident that possession was not being turned into points.
A converted break away try saw both the lead and momentum switch to Ynysddu. The Gwent club certainly made the most of it and stretched their lead with a penalty giving them a 10-5 lead at half time.
Ynysddu certainly made Ystradgynlais tackle for the first twenty minutes of the second half and amazingly only conceded one try. Bodies were certainly being put on the line and commitment to get hands under the ball.
As time progressed Ynysddu's ten point lead looked strong enough to carry them through to bowl final, fortunately the boys from Ystrad are determined bunch.
On the 72 minute mark Ricky Williams, a few meters from his own line put a chip over for Bowdy Davies to catch. The winger beat no less than seven defenders with his pace and power to score in the corner. The conversion was missed and the Blues had five minutes to score.
Snipping breaks from scrum half Ryan, a more solid platform and a determined run from Ricky Williams saw the Blues on the attack. The try finally came in the last minute from star man Bowdy Davies.
A beautiful pass from Alex Davies, which Sonny Bill Williams would have been proud of drew in two men to free the speedy winger. The conversion again was missed but the Blues were going through on try count.
The final whistle and victory sent the Ystradgynlais players and crowd wild. What a day the club had experienced, emotional is not the word.
Ystradgynlais will face Cambrian Welfare at Millennium stadium on Sunday May 3, kick off 1pm and any travelling supporters wanting transport can buy a bus ticket at Ystradgynlais Rugby club for £10.
